So... should you? Well... consider the following:
How's their weight? If they're very new-born, have they regained their birth weight? Have you been advised by medical or feeding professionals that they need waking to feed?
How long has it been since they last fed? Newborns have tiny tummy's and, if you're breastfeeding, you want to be emptying your breasts regularly to communicate to your body that milk is wanted - in the early days and weeks, you're signalling the milk-making hormones to set your breasts up for success! In the weeks and months following supply establishing, you're telling your breasts directly whether the milk in them is needed or not.
Is it likely that if they don't feed enough in the day, they'll simply play catch up tonight?
How do they seem? Could they be a bit under the weather? Maybe sleep is a priority so their body can rest and recover?
How have their nappies been? Do you think they've eaten and drunk enough so far today? Your looking for at least 6 heavy, wet nappies and 2 dirty nappies from around day 6 until at least week 6
Are you really hoping they sleep at a particular point today...like...on the school run? Could waking them now make this more likely in an hour or 2? While you may be following wake-windows and expecting your baby to stay awake a certain amount after each sleep, if they sleep for a particularly short amount...less than a whole sleep cycle, then they likely won't be able to stay awake as long before needing more sleep.
Might offering a dream feed (a feed when they're still sleeping/half asleep) mean they are sufficiently fuelled to not need another at a less optimal time i.e. 2 in the morning?
So, you see, it's not quite a yes or no situation....but more of a here and now situation. Your baby, your day, your parenting and your own judgement
If you take one path today - maybe you wake them, maybe you don't - and it all goes tits up...you don't have to do it next time
What do you think you'd do? Wake the baby?
