Recently, as my friend and I left the theatre after an amazing performance of The Witches, my friend turned to me and said "I know which bit will have annoyed you tonight..."
I've become predictable but I don't care! She was right!
At some point in the performance...I can't recall exactly how far in, one of the lead child characters and his parents are introduced...Part of the comedy aspect of this character places him as an only child from a highly privileged background and very much the centre of his parents world.
Here comes the gag...The mum makes a quip about having breastfed young Bruno until he was 5. The audience laughts. Hahahahahahaha! How ridiculous! Of course the 'mummy's boy' was still breastfeeding at 5 when he should have definitely been transitioned onto cows milk....or is it Oat milk? Or Soy?
But why? There's actually nothing wrong with her - or anyone else for that matter - breastfeeding their Bruno, aged 5! Was she happy to be breastfeeding? Was he? Then "crack on!", I say!
And, please, playwrights, screenwriters, authors...stop using your artistic and creative talents to push the untrue rhetoric that breastfeeding older children is anything other than a perfect example or nature and nurturing in play.
I offer a range of guidance for new parents, including tailored advice and hands on support.
