If your child is capable of asking for boob or simply walking over and latching himself on...Great! Keep going! (Or, at least until either one of you doesn't want to anymore!)
Yes...I said it....
I'm fed up of seeing comments on photos of any baby that appears remotely toddler-age (even if they're just a larger 8 month old....) and beyond, calmly enjoying a comforting, natural, magical moment at the breast, saying things like.
"they're way too big to still be doing that!"
"if they're old enough to walk/talk/play/drink cows milk from a cup, they're too old to breastfeed!"
and much worse....but I don't want to dedicate this post to all the ridiculous responses to this perfectly natural event!
(Even writing this, I went down a rabbit hole on google images to get hold of illustrations for my Instagram of older toddlers and children breastfeeding. But there was nada! Zilch! Zero....Luckily, there were some gorgeous photos! But what kind of message does that send?)
Anyway....
Breastfeeding is natures way of humans feeding their young during infancy and early childhood and ensuring their survival through all the wonderful immunological and developmental benefits they provide to a growing baby and child, as well as providing the comfort and connection our young need!
One of my favourite revelations during my Infant Feeding Coach training was a discussion around why we call Milk Teeth by that name....Our bodies are designed to feed at the breast while we still have those baby teeth...and those last far beyond toddlerhood!
So, next time someone tells you that your mini-me isn't mini enough to still be breastfeeding, you can ask them when they lost their first tooth or tell them how quickly you can calm your three-nager during a tantrum simply with your boobs...!
And you just carry on...until you and your child, no-one else, are ready to stop!
