So, while baby snuggles up at your breast, how do you know that she is actually taking in milk?
Here's some things to look out for:
Full, rounded cheeks while baby sucks - not sucking in like on a straw
A pattern of sucking starting with short, fast sucks while baby let's your breasts know that the milk needs to flow, changing into slowing, deeper sucks and swallows as the feed progresses, ending with rapid flutter sucks towards the end
Each feed lasts between 5 and 45 minutes...longer or shorter may be a sign baby is working too hard or struggling
SWALLOWS! Every few sucks after the letdown, baby should be swallowing. If unable to see baby's chin dropping (indicating a swallow), you may be able to hear it!
At least 5 or 6 wet nappies and 2-4 poos in 24 hours after the mature milk has come in on day 3-5 post-partum.
Good weight gain after the initial weight loss that can occur as baby loses some of their excess fluid from during gestation and birth. On average, baby should be gaining approximately 28g/day after they've returned to birth-weight
