Short answer: no!Â
Here are some things to consider when deciding whether to use dummies with your baby:
They are artificial nipples - so when someone says that you're baby who often seeks comfort at your breast is "using you as a dummy", that doesn't make sense...the breast came first. Babies with dummies are in fact using the dummy as a breast (because breastfeeding isn't always for nutrition!)
Although there is some evidence that dummies reduce the risk of SIDS by being used during sleep, the reasons why aren't fully understood and, although fine to introduce at any point, may have an impact on feeding particularly in the early days
Dummy cords/attachments are not recommended - especially during sleep - as baby shouldn't have anything in their cot
They can mask feeding cues or, if given when baby is rooting or even upset, mean a feed is missed as the baby calms to sleep through sucking (this might sound ideal until your breasts feel engorged or your supply begins to dip as it responds to the reduction in your baby stimulating them!)
Overuse of a dummy can effect how teeth grow so be mindful of how often they are used and when you stop using them
Whether you choose to use dummies is entirely up to each individual family. These are just some thoughts to consider and there's always support and guidance out there for how to make changes to dummy-use if and when you and your little one are ready.
