Although pictures of breastfeeding, breastfeeding on screen and even a large number of new parents, would automatically opt for a breastfeeding position like the cradle hold, this type of hold has been adopted from bottle feeding.
Feeding while laid back - as if in a bath - with baby on top, hands either side of his head, is the most natural way a baby innately knows how to feed. This is why this is sometimes called the Biological Nurturing Position. By triggering the breast crawl and baby's feeding reflexes, he should be able to find the breast, latch on and suckle without adults needing to intervene (other than to lie back and relax)!
So, if your feeding position currently is causing discomfort or you feel baby is struggling, make yourself comfy in bed or longways on the sofa, place baby on your and give him time to explore….you might find that everything falls into place. Once baby is latched, you can use pillows or blankets as extra props to support you and baby and optimise your comfort.
Note: it's not a guaranteed win as some body and breast shapes may not find this position comes as naturally to them or baby, but if in doubt: give it a go and if you think some additional support to get you there or explore other positioning options would be of help, get in touch!
I offer a range of guidance for new parents, including tailored advice and hands on support.
