Sterifeed Colostrum Collector WARNING as of October 2023
DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT FOR DIRECTLY FEEDING YOUR BABY
USE FOR COLLECTION AND STORAGE ONLY
At the start of October a safety warning was issued by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) centred around these commonly used syringes made by Medicare Colgate.
They are a really handy tool for collecting and storing the "liquid gold" that is Colostrum both before birth and in the first few days after giving birth.
However, 6 incidents have been reported where babies have been fed the collected colostrum using the collector, after mistakenly forgetting to remove the cap. This led to the cap lodging in their throats with at least 1 of these babies requiring emergency surgery to remove it.
Consider feeding this magical first milk to your baby either directly from a sterile spoon on which you've collected it or from a sterile cup instead.
Due to colostrum's small quantities, using a bottle isn't really necessary and may mean precious amounts are left stuck to the inside of the teat.
Speak to your healthcare provider or a feeding specialist if you're concerned about any of this.
Now that the scary part is conveyed: happy harvesting and congratulations on the start of your infant feeding journey!
