Hoping to breastfeed your baby?
It's important that not only you have the basic understanding of how breastfeeding works, but that your support system also know what to expect from your breastfeeding journey. The friends and family who will be around you in those early days, weeks, months and beyond, need to be up-to-date on what your feeding goals mean for you and baby and both your needs post-partum!
Understanding about breastfeeding and how baby's bodies work is frequently being explored and expanded.
It is better understood now about the tiny-ness of baby's tummies, how milk production works by supply and demand, and the benefits of breastfeeding beyond simple nutrition!
But understandably, if your mum, aunty or grandma breastfed decades ago, they may be carrying ideas around of 3-hourly scheduled feeds, night feeds being something to be trained out of a baby, and breastfeeding only being for babies, with any child older than 1 being described (unironically) as "using you like a dummy"...
So your breastfeeding journey is a great opportunity to update those people and to ensure you have the support around you that you need to have a happy and healthy infant feeding journey until you and your baby, and no-one else, decide it is time to stop!
If you think it might help to have someone certified in infant feeding to come and chat with you all, as the Village due to raise your baby, about realistic expectations and how you and baby can best be supported, I am happy to do that!
