It's one of my not-so-guilty-in-fact-very-helpful-and-important-for-baby pleasures, to give the new-borns I support, a lovely little manicure session, smoothing out those tiny fingertips and ridding them of their tiny talons!
Even today, I was volunteering at @greatormondst and it was just about in my will-power to carry on singing and playing with a little 8 month old patient, without asking around for the nearest filing option for her nails! Babies of all ages are not strangers to, at first unintentionally, and then more intentionally, bringing their hands to their faces, and this can result in them accidentally scratching themselves if their nails are left too long.
I've worked with many parents who have said they are nervous of trimming their little one's nails, something I definitely appreciate when thinking about approaching such tiny digits with a sharp pair or nail scissors or clippers....
That's why I personally don't opt for those and go for the snazzy electric nail trimmer option (there are many versions out there) which provides various gently rotating surfaces that can be swapped in and out depending on baby's age, to file the nails down to a less scratchable length! I've not met a baby yet who's nails I struggled to manage with one of these!
So, next time your baby is grasping your finger or pulling at your hair, just take a moment to have an inspection of those little grabbers...Is it time they had a baby manicure?
(And I'm not even joking when I say, if you're struggling and really feel you can't do it, I'll do it for you...!)
I offer a range of guidance for new parents, including tailored advice and hands on support.
