You can't be expected to look after a tiny human (or anyone else for that matter) if you're not looking after yourself first.
I spent my Sunday in full Elfie mode, visiting children and their families in my volunteering home at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
As we walked into each child's room, we'd see not only the joy on the children's faces but also the moment of a different excitement on the faces of the parent or carer who greet us with an eager "are you OK to stay while I go and grab a cup of tea?" or similar....
When I'm not in my daily work with families at home with their newborns and any other older children, I'm seeing families navigating their worst nightmare come true - a child possibly too sick to spend Christmas at home.
For those families, they (and we as volunteers) do what we can to bring festive cheer to the four walls of a hospital room and corridors of each ward.
And, just by stepping into their bubble and offering to sit with their child, play a game of headbandz, or sing some songs, we're giving those parents to pause, take a breath, a refill their cup - even just a bit.
So, don't forget to refill yours - to find little moments of self-care to bring to your day!
Make a cup of tea (or ask me to make an Ellie Tea...)
Have something to eat and actually sit down to take your sweet time, and eat without rushing
Watch something or read something that you love or makes you smile
Give a loved one a call just to hear their voice
Do some mindful colouring or something else that requires concentration...
Get some fresh air however and whenever you can
Put your favourite music on and dance and sing along!
