Your new-borns hands are so important in helping them navigate the world and find their way!Â
Lots of newborn onesies come with sleeves that end in little mits to cover baby's hands which might be handy if, for example, it's a little cold and you forgot to pack the mittens....Or if you haven't got around to cutting those speedily growing nails in a while and you're worried about them scratching themselves (or you...) (if this last one is the case, feel free to give me a bell...I just love giving baby manicures!)
But generally...their hands a fantastic tool to help them thrive!
When breastfeeding, babies use their hands to help stimulate the breast, touching, stroking, possibly hitting when the flow slows...this is good! They're helping!
They discover the world with their hands, using their hands to reach and explore, sometimes bringing the world to their mouth this way - a vital part of familiarising themselves and their body, internally and externally, with their surroundings
As they grow, they soothe themselves with their hands, perhaps sucking their fingers or thumb
They communicate with their hands - clenching fists when emotions are heightened and relaxing their hands into your chest as they fall asleep
They're used to having their hands up by their face from in-utero so it's comforting in this new, uncertain world
With my Montessori hat on:
"The hands are the instruments of man's intelligence".
So, free the hands and let your baby explore and learn how nature intended.
I offer a range of guidance for new parents, including tailored advice and hands on support.
