Sometimes you just need to scratch that middle-of-the-night online shopping itch, so: here's some ideas based on your baby's very basic clothing needs:
6-8 Vests (Depending on the season, you may want a mix of long and short-sleeved options)
6-8 zippered sleepsuits (because noone wants to be faffing around with poppers at 3am)
2 Jumpers (Preferably without hoods as these aren't safe for sleep)
2-3 Trousers (tracksuit/legging style is most comfortable for your little one)
2-4 pairs of socks (Most sleepsuits have foot coverings attached so these are just as back-up and if you've had a winter baby, to add additional layers!)
1 pair of mittens
1 snowsuit for winter or sunhat for summer
When it comes to clothes for your new-born 100% cotton is best on baby's skin! If you want to put something like that jumper your aunty knitted on, consider layering something softer underneath.
Remember: your baby isn't being presented at an awards show or on the catwalk…so fancy fabrics, sequins, complex fastenings and miniature leather jackets are just not needed (and WILL inevitably get an explosive poo all the way up them the second you remove the label). Of course buy the pretty party dress if you really want! Or the smart 'New Baby' shirt....but keep in mind the fiddly fastenings and the bodily fluids!
One of the things I envy most about babies (besides the sleeping and eating all day bit) is the fact they get to essentially live in pyjamas 24/7…the dream! Plus they get to have ears on everything and cute animals on their bum!
Also, remember: not all babies are born equal (in size)! You can't be sure what size YOUR little one will fit so don't go overboard with the tiniest options. Your baby will be growing in no time, but they're unlikely to shrink…
With this in mind, focus on the current/upcoming season. Don't plan too far ahead (but never turn the offer of hand-me-downs!)
